Birdwatchin': Big Bird

First up in our series of famous Avains is "Big Bird" an 8" yellow canary who is one of the most famous residents of Sesame Street, New York City.

Big Bird first appeared on our screens in 1969 and has become a firm favourite on children's television. He has made numerous appearances on the big screen too including a cameo in the 1979s "The Muppet Movie" set before the days of "The Muppet show" where he is seen heading in the direction of New York city looking for fame and fortune.

Big bird lives in the large nest behind 123 Sesame Street and is famous for his silly misunderstandings and childlike perspective, He is often seen to be confused about what is happening on the street.

Despite being a figure of fun Big Bird is no stranger to controversy, in 2012 during the first presidential debate Mitt Romney named Big Bird as something he would cut from the federal budget if elected (as PBS is publicly funded). President Obama's campaign followed up with television advert suggesting that Romney was harder on Big Bird than he was white collar crime!

It would be great to have someone like Big Bird around all the time but given his size it's not always practical! Instead why not befriend one of our little yellow birds by clicking here.
